The festival of Deepavali will soon start. May I take the occasion to wish all my cyber-friends a very Happy Deepavali? May the festival of lights bring prosperity and happiness to our lives.

Our society is in a difficult situation currently. There is so much propaganda of every kind that it is hard to know what is true and what is not. What is illusion? And what is reality?

Is what we read in the newspapers true or has the real situation been distorted? Are the news channels showing us reality or are the scenes that are telecast, merely staged?

Last month a reality show on television presented a woman as the widow of a victim of the July 2006 Mumbai bomb blasts. She said that she had not been given compensation. Her whole story turned out to be false.

Politicians, the media, everyone has a hidden agenda to act upon. It is for the common man to keep his eyes open and his mind receptive to the truth. He should try to be well informed and able to decide for himself what the truth really is.

This Deepavali, I think we should pray-

‘Om asato ma sadgamaya,
tamaso ma jyotirgamaya,
mrityorma amritamgamaya
Om shantih shantih shantih’

‘Oh Almighty, lead us from falsity to the truth,
from darkness to light,
from death to immortality,
May there be peace.’
