वनानि दहतो वन्हेः सखा भवति मारुतः l
स एव दीपनाशाय कृशे कस्यास्ति सौहृदम् ll
At the time of a forest fire [when fire is burning down (दहतो वन्हेः) forests (वनानि)] , the wind (मारुतः)becomes a friend (सखा भवति) of the fire.
However this same (wind ) (स एव) extinguishes (the flame in) a lamp (दीपनाशाय).
Who will befriend (कस्यास्ति सौहृदम्) a weakling? (कृशे)
When a forest fire is raging, the wind causes it to spread even more. But when this same fire is burning in a tiny lamp, the wind does not help it to burn, but instead snuffs it out.
If we become strong ourselves, physically or mentally, as the situation demands, then we may expect others to support us. If we are strong in our principles, then others will be on our side.
But if we stay weak, then we will not get support, on the contrary, there will always be someone bent on destroying us. Many times, those who would have supported us had we been strong, are the very ones who oppose us if we are weak.
What is true of individuals, is true of communities and of nations, too. So to cultivate strength is of the utmost importance.
